This Week in the News- It’s Too Much!

Happy Friday.  There are tons of things that have been going on this week, and I feel the need to comment on them.  One item, in particular, has caused me great discomfort, and I meant to discuss it with you all a long time ago.

First, can we talk about Donald Trump?  Now, I see he’s “potentially” putting his hat in the ring as a Republican candidate for President in 2012.  But why is he asking for Obama’s birth certificate?  Yes, I know it’s his PR’s plan to create a buzz around “The Donald” and to get his name out there, but his people couldn’t pick a better ploy?  Donald is an intelligent man.  But do any of us REALLY think Obama would be the 44th President of these United States if he was not an American citizen???  I may boycott “Celebrity Apprentice” this week just so I can show him he does not have my support.  And yes, I know I’m only one and there are tons of millions of people who will watch, but I doubt if I will be one of them.

Can we talk about this little 8 year-old boy who got pepper-sprayed in Colorado in February?  Yes, you read correctly-a 2nd grader was pepper-sprayed by cops at his school because he had a temper tantrum in class.  Still think excessive force was used?  I implore you to read the entire story here, then you can comment.  My thoughts?  I’m trying to figure out why this boy was still attending classes.  This incident is not the first time the police have been called on this student.  His mother believes the police used excessive force; I believe she’s avoiding the real issue.  This little boy has some real deep issues.  Yes, he’s seeing a therapist, but he hasn’t been diagnosed with any illnesses nor is he on any type of medication.  And honestly, if a student destroys school property and threatens to “kill” his teachers, that’s more than a temper tantrum.

It looks like the federal government is about to shutdown.  Think it doesn’t affect you?  I think you’d be surprised.  You may not feel a sting at first, but if this goes on for awhile, this could have devastating results for us all.  Go here to see how this shutdown will affect you.   And if you’re not sure how the nation’s capital will be affected, read more here.  And another article to take a look at is here.   One good thing I can say is that no parking tickets will be written during the shutdown…

Lastly, I’ll end by saying I plan on watching “Braxton Family Values” this weekend.  Yes, Toni Braxton has another hustle to help her get out of debt.  I shouldn’t watch-in the words of my “auntie” Madeline, “Don’t watch that show!”-but I can’t help it.  I think it’ll be interesting.  *shrugs* Sue me.  But if it’s crap, please believe I’ll let you guys know.

So what did I miss?  How will you be affected if the government shuts down?  Or will your life go on as if nothing changed?  What do you think about Donald Trump harassing Obama?  (Or is he just asking for something simple.)  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

P.S. An interesting article I came across.  Hopefully the police will back on this and find the killer.  And I hope they find Tupac’s killer, too.

This Week in the News-Happy New Year!

So, it’s a new year, but of course “This Week in the News” isn’t going anywhere!  There have been a lot of things going on with celebrities, politics, and everyone, so let’s get started!

Isn't she fabulous!?!?!

First, if you haven’t seen her in awhile, Raven-Symone’ has lost some weight and looked GREAT at the People’s Choice Awards, but she’s not feeling her new thin self. (Read more here.)  Raven stated that she felt she looked fine at her heavier weight even though others didn’t, and she wears bigger clothes now to hide her thinner physique.  As a “thick girl”, I think I can relate to Raven.  Although I would like to tone a bit, I don’t think I would look good at a size 8;  I think I would look my best at a size 12-14.  But whatever size she is, I think she’s going to look good, because she’s simply a beautiful girl.

So, it appears that Tiny got caught giving her man, T.I., a hand-job when she was visiting him in prison…do I really need to say more on this?  Probably not, so moving on…

It looks like Toni Braxton is considering posing in “Playboy”.  The singer stated she will only do partial nudity.  I guess filing for bankruptcy for the 2nd time since 1998 has Ms. Braxton on hard times and looking to make some cash to pay off her debt.  But isn’t somebody going to counsel Toni and figure out HOW she ended up with this much debt (reportedly between $10 and $50 million) and help her so she doesn’t do this again?  I mean, come on, son!  I know I’m not the best at handling finances (I can admit my shortcomings and I’m working in doing better…actually I AM doing better.), but if I have to declare bankruptcy, you can bet your last dollar that I don’t do it again.  In any event, I’m sure the spread will be hot.  And I’m trying to decide if I’ll watch her upcoming show “Braxton Family Values” on WE TV, which debuts in April.

Mayor Gray

Next up, DC has a new mayor!!! Vince Gray was sworn in as mayor of the District of Columbia this past Sunday.  I was able to watch it on TV.  And I had an opportunity to go to the Inaugural Ball…but did I go?? No. *deep sigh*  I thought because I was under the weather and had no voice, it would be in my best interest (and the citizens of DC) that I keep with my original plans.  But I did like seeing everyone’s pictures.

Of course I didn’t mention Elizabeth Edwards leaving her husband, John, out of her will, Ted Williams’ newfound celebrity, Khloe Kardashian’s new red hair (which I love), these birds that keep dying (it’s a sign of the end!) or the case I was on this week.  (I was the alternate juror in this case and was dismissed before deliberations began.)  What do you guys think?  Does Raven look better as a “Skinny Minnie” or as a “Thick Ums”?  Should Toni really pose in “Playboy”?  Did you attend the gala for Mayor Gray (who happens to be my neighbor, and I’m mighty perturbed I’m gonna miss him at our community association meeiting tomorrow)?   Feel free to comment on the other things I mentioned or failed to mention.  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News-Celebrity Edition

Happy Friday, folks!!   A lot is going on this week that has caught my attention.  “Grey’s Anatomy” was GREAT last night, Boris Kodjoe doesn’t want to be a sex symbol anymore, and Roman Polanski‘s accuser wants the charges dropped after 30+ years.

If you aren’t familiar, Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski pleaded guilty to the 1977 charge of engaging in unlawful sex with a minor.  Polanski, fearing the judge in his case would provide a harsher sentence than what was agreed upon in his plea deal, fled the U.S. and has been a fugitive for over 30 years.   Said minor was 13 year old Samantha Geimer, who was on “Larry King Live” last night stating that she wants the charges to be dropped.   When Polanski went to Switzerland last year, he was arrested on a fugitive U.S. warrant.  Geimer fears the media circus that will continue to grow in her backyard if Polanski were brought back to the U.S.  (Um, what does she think will happen now that she’s appeared on Larry King???)  I’ll let you read more of her story here, but if I must say, “This is a load of bullcrap!”  If this were John Singleton or Spike Lee, or let’s take it back to the 70’s and say Melvin Van Peebles, they would be UNDER the jail!!!  I try not to be one of these black people that brings race into everything, but let’s be real here.  I know for a fact that if this were a minority director, regardless of his success in Hollywood, this case would not have dragged out like it has.  His butt would’ve been brought back to California (in 1977), he would have been sentenced, and would probably still be in jail.  I dare somebody to tell me they disagree.

Next up, Boris Kodjoe tells BlackVoices he’s no longer interested in just being a sex symbol; he wants to be considered a serious actor.  Ummm, call me crazy, but can’t you do both?  People take Brad Pitt as a serious actor…you know, let me use someone else.   People think Will Smith is a serious actor and a sex symbol.  Of course Will had to pay his dues, and that’s what Boris is going through.  I mean, he started his career modeling…c’mon, dude.   But I guess he has matured as he’s gotten older, so who can blame him?  But if he really didn’t want to be considered a sex symbol, he’d let that six-pack go and get a keg.

Once again, Toni Braxton has filed for bankruptcy.   Potentially having debt totaling close to $50 million, Toni is reportedly only (I know, only) worth $1 to $10 million.  I’m not sure what is going on with Ms. Braxton, but I hope she gets her finances in order.

I’ve never met her in life and wouldn’t know her if she came up and slapped me in my face, but I heart Shonda Rhimes.  The “Grey’s Anatomy” creator has a WILD imagination.  I got hooked on Grey’s last year and catch re-runs on “Lifetime”.  I really don’t have any news about Ms. Rhimes, I just want to say I love that show.   Last night’s episode was great, and one of my girlhood on-again/off-again crushes Omar Gooding had a guest role.

Ok, people, what else is going on Hollywood…or those who think they are Hollywood?  I know you guys saw the season premiere of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta“!  These girls are a trip, and this season is going to wild!  I didn’t talk about Mario hitting his mama last week, but ya’ll just pray for him.  Ashanti and Nelly continue to deny their relationship.  I think I’m with my “aunt” Madeline who said, “They’re probably already married.”  And…my Jaguars won last week!!! God bless Josh Scobee and his kicking abilities!!! Let’s see how my boys play against the Bills on Sunday.  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

Lastly, don’t forget about Mitrice
