“Scandal” Catch Up

So, we are a day away from the 4th new episode of Season 3 of “Scandal”… and I have yet to write a post about any of them.  See, what had happened was…

On the evening of October 3, I was minding my business, watching “Grey’s Anatomy” in the comfort of my own home, when I decided that the episode wasn’t that exciting.  So I was going to take a quick nap and be up in time for “Scandal”.  The next thing I know, I wake up, see what doesn’t appear to be “Scandal” on television, grab my phone and see that it’s 11:19, and fearfully realize that I have slept through the season premiere. To say I was pissed, shocked, and amazed at myself is an understatement.  I can go to sleep at 9 o’clock any night of the week except Thursday.  It’s like my body subconciously KNOWS what night it is and realizes it’s vitally important that I stay awake and not be tired.  But on October 3, my body worked against me.  And so was Comcast.  I’m not happy to admit this, but I have woken up at 5 am on a Friday morning in the past to re-watch an episode of “Scandal”. (Don’t judge me.)  So I wasn’t worried.  I just figured I would go to bed, wake up at the crack of dawn, and watch the episode so that I could contribute to the conversation that was sure to take place at work.  Because I had gotten so much rest, I woke up on my own at 4 am…checked On Demand…and did not see “Scandal”.  I didn’t panic.  I went to sleep on the couch, woke up around 5, and looked at On Demand again.  Nothing.  There was nothing new at 6, either.  So, against my better judgement, I looked at stories that discussed the premiere, but not anything that would totally give the main stuff away.  By the time I made it home Friday night with Chinese take-out, the new episode was up, and I was good to go.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t that impressed.  It possibly could have something to do with the fact that I kinda knew what to expect, like Byron Douglas aka Eli/Rowan giving an EPIC speech to Olivia during the first scene, Olivia standing up to her daddy, Mellie name-calling Olivia to her face (that was good), Fitz telling Tom to let it slip that Olivia was his mistress, and some other non-notable things that happened, except for Jeannine being set up to have been with Fitz; that was kinda genius.  Because I do not know in WHAT realistic world Fitz would think that the world would be cool with him marrying his mistress and making her First Lady.  Well, unless your Mark Sanford-then it’s possible. Oh, and Byron really did give a good speech.

But that second episode…What a wonderfully glorious episode!  We all know I am not a fan of Edison, but I was excited to see him!  (Do NOT ask me why, because two weeks later I still don’t know.)  And you all know I love a good flashback, so I was happy to see the evolution of Byron/Eli/Rowan and Olivia’s relationship.  Suffice it to say, there were definitely some moments in the first two episodes that reminded me of Southern Dad and myself.  Anywho, it was just great television.  I am super super weirded out that Huck let it out about B613.  And I was even more super weirded out when Byron/Eli/Rowan came face-to-face with Huck.  The “arguing” scene with Olivia and Daddy was priceless.  That was excellent acting.  Oh, can I also say that I am so mad that Huck choked Liv…but she kinda had it coming. She should not have lied.  BUT, I was SO pissed at Quinn!  I just want her to sit DOWN somewhere!  UGH!!! She’s always into something!  If she had just minded her own business, Huck never would have found out.  Now Huck and Olivia have to re-build their trust in each other again.

Episode 3 was boring…except the end when Huck was following Byron/Eli/Rowan and threatened him.  I knew he wasn’t going to shoot him, though.  And it’s amazing that Byron/Eli/Rowan still has that kind of control over Huck!  I just want to find out about Operation Remington…

So, that’s my re-cap over the last 3 weeks.  I tried to not have it be that long and focus on the episode I really liked.  Feel free to share your thoughts or anything I missed, because I know it’s alot!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

Southern Girl Fall 2013 TV Guide

To say I love television is an understatement.  If I have free time, meaning I don’t have anywhere I need to be, I can be found chilling on my couch watching television.  Reality, sitcoms, or dramas-it doesn’t make a difference.  And PLEASE do not let USA have a “Law and Order:SVU” marathon; I will never get up.  Suffice it to say, it seems as if networks have stepped their games up this year and are trying to bring us quality television.  So, without further adieu, check out some of my top picks for this upcoming season.

Reality Television

Well, the fifth season of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” has come to an end.  And while the episodes are great, it’s the reunions that we live for!  Honestly, I’m sick of this feud between the Gorgas and Guidices.  Can’t they just make up and move on???  So, I’m happy to say that my top 3 favorite reality shows (at least on Bravo) are coming back in November.  “Shahs of Sunset”, the “Real Housewives of Atlanta”, and the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” are coming back strong!  And let’s not forget “The Voice”!  I LOVE this show!  And Christina Aguilera and Cee-Lo are back!  But can we talk about cutie Adam Levine…with his goatee/mustache combo???  I always thought Adam was super cute, but that facial hair has taken him to another level.  Oh…let me get back on track. Honestly, “The Voice” is probably the best vocal competition show; it’s WAY better than “American Idol”, in my humble opinion.

Sitcom

So Tia Mowry’s new show “Instant Mom” premiered last night, and I totally missed it.  I’ll most likely catch it On Demand.  I’m excited to see this show, because I’ve missed Tia on “The Game” and Sheryl Lee Ralph and Michael Boatman are great actors.  Plus, the premise of the show seems really cute.  And we all need a good laugh!

Drama

So, at the prodding of some co-workers, I caught “The Blacklist” and “Hostages” this weekend.  Sad to say, but I’m not that impressed by “The Blacklist”.  While I LOVE Harry Lennix and James Spader, I couldn’t get into it.  And when I realized that I was playing on my phone during commercials AND when the show came back on, I knew something was wrong.  One thing that I knew was unbelievable and totally not true was the fact that Elizabeth (the main character) was able to be an FBI Agent and her daddy was a criminal… That never would have gotten passed the background check in real life, and it was just glossed over on the show… I’m not sure how I feel about that.  The only reason why I might continue to tune in is so I can find out who her husband really is…. “Hostages”…LOVED!!! And maybe it helped that it stars Tate Donovan, who I loved to hate in “Deception”, and my boo from “The Practice” Dylan McDermott.  This show is GREAT!!!! I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next!  Now after just the first episode, you’re wondering who’s good, who’s bad, and who’s working together!

“Law and Order: SVU” and “Grey’s Anatomy” had 2 hour premieres last week!  Unfortunately, I was talking to Southern Dad during the first 30-45 minutes of each show… -_- Anywho, from what I could tell, they both looked pretty good.  I will say that I personally think it’s too soon for this episode that is coming on this Wednesday on L&O:SVU.  Cybil Shepherd, who I love, is guest starring as a woman that killed a teenager; and of course, the tagline used was, “Was is self-defense or racism?”  It’s way too soon, SVU.  But I’ll watch just to see what happens.

Last, but certainly not least, is “Scandal”!!!!!  I’m surprised I didn’t spontaneously combust this summer… October 3 seemed so far away in June…and now it’s (almost) here!  I need to find out about this relationship with Olivia and her daddy, Byron Douglas.  And I need to find out who leaked the relationship between Olivia and Fitz.  And I need to find out how they are going to spin this in Fitz’s favor for the upcoming election.  I will be attending a watch party this week to tune in.  I’m not sure how this is going to go down, because you all know I need to be completely focused when I watch this show.  And I don’t particularly like having other people around because it will encourage discussion…and you guys know I love to talk.

Some honorable mentions include “The Game” and “Being Mary Jane”, which premiere in January.  Oh, and let’s not forget “The Walking Dead”, which premieres October 13!!!  I can’t wait to see how Rick and the others get The Governor!!!  I’m sure I’ve missed some other shows, so feel free to make suggestions.  They say it’s supposed to be a really cold winter in DC, so I’m sure I’ll need some good television to keep me occupied while I’m in hibernation!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

P.S. I’m still trying to decide if I’m going to watch “Preachers of LA”.  The jury’s still out…

That’s All Folks

Last night was the season finale to “Scandal”, a show that millions of people have been waiting on.  While numerous questions were answered and surprises occurred, I was underwhelmed by this episode.  One Facebook friend said my expectations were too high.  I disagree.  Two of my favorite episodes aired in December.  I can’t say that this finale was better than those episodes.

I can say the most shocking revelation is that Byron Douglas has a name.  And it’s Mr. Pope.  So not only is Byron Douglas Olivia’s daddy, he’s one evil dude.  And a rulebreaker.  He broke a major rule of B-613; he has a child.  And he must have NO conscience because he attempted to kill said child.  AND he has completely set her up for failure by outing her affair.   I do have some questions for and about Byron-were he and Olivia ever close?  Has he been “missing”?  Does Olivia know he lives in Washington?  How long has he been involved with B-613?  And is he going to try to get Huck next season? And most importantly, was he REALLY going to kill Olivia???

Thanks to Jake for saving Liv’s life and sacrificing his own.  That, to me, shows that he really cared about her.  But I still don’t believe that his only job was to sleep with her.  I wonder if we will ever find out what his true intentions were.

David Rosen- I was right; he totally was working with Billy, but he played Billy and advanced his own career.  So kudos to David for wearing the white hat and bringing Billy to justice!  I have to admit, I thought Fitz was going to announce David was going to be his running mate.  Turns out he just wanted his job back.

Quinn is slowly turning into a mini-Huck, which we all knew was going to happen.  But when she delighted in torturing Billy???  She definitely is losing herself while Huch is regaining some of his humanity back.  I wonder what Shonda & Co. are going to do with her next season…

Fitz went back to Mellie (again), Olivia decided to stay with her gladiators, and all was righted with the world.

Until Byron outed Olivia.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how this scandal plays out in season 3.  I guess I’ll have to watch re-runs until September.  Tonight, I will be on WHUR’s “The Daily Drum” discussing last night’s season finale.  Tune in to 96.3 FM or http://www.whur.com to check it out!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

Who is Billy Chambers?

If you were asking yourself that question last night, you are not a true Gladiator.  Just when I begin to get disilluisioned and disappointed with “Scandal”, Shonda & Co. reel me back in.  Kudos to my neighbor, Ms. V., for saying months ago that Billy Chambers was still alive.  I have to admit, I speculated that the mole/Albatross was either Cyrus or the Governor of Maryland.  This show proves that just because someone isn’t on your tv screen anymore means that they’ve disappeared never to return again.

So, for those of you that need a re-cap of Billy, here you go.  No thanks are required.  Billy Chambers was Sally Langston’s Chief of Staff (her Cyrus).  During the primary, Billy was hell bent on taking down Fitz; so much so, he planted a recording device in his hotel room while Fitz was on the campaign trail.  Turned out, that was the first night Olivia and Fitz were together.  While the woman on the tape never speaks, Billy thinks he’s hit gold.  When he goes to present said tape to Sally, she’s all too happy to announce that she has decided to run as Fitz’s VP, which crushes Billy.  So he holds on to the tape.  Fast forward two years, Billy talks his “girlfriend”, Amanda Tanner, into having an affair with the president.  Amanda goes public with her story, although her identity is not revealed at first.  Cyrus, in an effort to make Amanda Tanner disappear, hires Charlie to take care of her. A copy of the tape is sent to Fitz and Cyrus, but they are at a loss of what to do.  But they decide to take it public.  When the tape is released, Mellie says it’s her.  (Billy can’t catch a break!!!)  Quinn’s reporter boyfriend, Gideon, has been researching the Amanda Tanner story and figured out Billy was involved with Amanda.  Billy, scared for his life because things have gotten out of control, stabs Gideon, resigns from his Chief of Staff position, and the last time anyone sees him, he’s on the elevator with Charlie…

Now, that you’re all caught up on Billy, let’s talk about David.  Something about David never sat quite well with me with him working at Pope and Associates.  And now I know why.  And Olivia was WAY too comfortable to open her safe in front of everyone, ESPECIALLY David.  I think her happy bliss has caused her to let her guard down.  And that is most unfortunate.

Poor James.  I don’t care how upset you are about what’s going on around you and feeling like your world is crumbling down, Cyrus was SO disrespectful and just plain mean to James yesterday.  His attitude was totally uncalled for.  But we know that Cyrus is a monster anyway, so should we really be surprised?

So, I’m totally confused.  Did David really kill that girl?  How did Billy get into the White House records?  How did Billy and David get together anyway?  Why is Billy trying to kill Olivia?  What is Byron Douglas and Jake’s real end game? (Even though I think I have that figured out, I’m still not sure.)  Are Defiance and Albatross even related???  And who is this faux Olivia Pope helping Mellie?  I have no shame in admitting I woke up and re-watched “Scandal” this morning.  I was still confused and needed answers, not that re-watching helped answer them.

Anywho, I was all set to have a watch party for the season finale next week and then decided that would not be a good idea.  While I love my friends, I don’t need ANY distractions next week.  My friends like to talk, no matter how much they admit they don’t, and probably won’t hush up after commercial breaks.  So, I will have my own Pop Secret and glass of bubbly prepped at 9:59 pm.  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

I Guess This IS Real Life

If you weren’t aware, I’m originally from South Carolina, born and raised, on the playground is where I spent most of days… (Sorry, I got a little carried away.)  I loved growing up in South Carolina.  Even though it’s not the Deep South, it’s still the South, and you encounter a few folks that remind you it’s still the South, but for the most part, I had no issues growing up.  Unfortunately, just like there are people from EVERY state that do crazy things, I’m not too happy of some of the activities from people in my home state.  I love SC fiercely, but sometimes things happen that I just don’t understand and make me lower my Palmetto Flag just a little.  I’ve already discussed the representative that shouted at President Obama during his first State of the Union address, yet I’ve never mentioned former governor Mark Sanford.

Mark Sanford was governor from 2003-2011.  He was married and has 4 boys.  In June 2009, after telling his staff he was going camping, the governor disappeared.  Like he wasn’t answering phone calls from staff and didn’t call his boys on Father’s Day disappeared.  NO ONE could get in touch with him.  He was missing for a total of 6 days.  I distinctly remember telling my co-workers, former military men, that he was with a woman.  They looked at me like I was crazy.  A few days later, it came out the governor was in Argentina with his mistress.  It also came out that Sanford used state funds to visit the other woman.  The fallout included the governor stepping down from his presidential role of the Republican Governors Association, but he had no desire to step down from his gubernatorial post.  His wife left him and their divorce was final the next year.  He is currently engaged to his former mistress.  And he was just (re-)elected to the US House of Representatives in a special election earlier this week.

I say all of this to say I might be wrong.  If you remember my post from last week, I stated that the latest episode of “Scandal” was not real life.  Apparently you can have an affair for years, lie about your whereabouts for a week, admit to using state funds to pay for your adulteress excursions, divorce your wife, run for re-election, and win.  So maybe mistresses and adulterers stay winning after all.  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city.
