This Week in the News

Happy Friday!  This week has been a pretty interesting week.  I am truly sad about the earthquake and tsunami that has hit Japan. I will pray for everyone affected by these events, and I hope you will do the same.

Earlier this week, twin sisters Chardee and Charron Hampton gave birth to baby girls on the same day…in the same hospital…across the hall from each other…2 hours apart.  Congrats to the new babies and their family!  Both sisters are engaged and are contemplating a double wedding.

It appears there’s about to a lockout of NFL players.  The players union and the owners have until 11:59 pm tonight to come up with a compromise.  From reading some of the comments on CNN.com, I have to say I’m in agreement with some of the people.  First off, these owners are greedy MFers…You want to DOUBLE the amount you take off top, but want your players to get paid the same thing?!?!   Honestly, the people who are really losing out are the fans, and quietly they’ve been losing out.  The NFL is a $9 BILLION industry.  Most of the true fans who want to attend games and support their favorite team can’t because tickets are so darn expensive.   This is just a case of people being greedy and looking out for self, but isn’t that America anyway?  What needs to be done is these owners need to donate some of this money to these victims in Japan.  But that’s another story for another day…

Felecia Pearson, better known as “Snoop” from “The Wire”, was arrested in a raid in Balitmore conducted by DEA agents and the Baltimore PD yesterday.   Apparently Snoop is no stranger to not abiding by the law, as she was charged with second-degree murder as a teenager and was also arrested in 2008.  In America, everyone is (supposed to be) presumed innocent until found guilty, so we’ll just end this story here.

Other minor events that happened this week include the break-up of Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Charlie Sheen’s home got invaded, and Gabrielle Union went in on why she’ll never be a reality star Basketball Wife.   I hope you all have a great weekend!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News

President Lyndon B. Johnson and Rev. Dr. Marti...

Happy Friday!  I am so ready for this long weekend!  Yes, we are all excited but we also need to find a way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  If you’re in the DMV you should definitely attend Benvole, Inc’s fundraiser tomorrow.  Today is the last day to purchase tickets (go here), so get yours NOW!!!  And of course yours truly will be there.  Also, make sure you give your time on Monday.  There are multiple things going on in DC and I’m sure in your city, so do your research and find a way to give back!

Now…that’s out of the way, let’s get into this week’s news!

First, I’m really sad about Ted Williams’ relapse.  It’s very unfortunate, especially since he was headed in the right direction.  But when we get too much too fast, if we’re not equipped to handle it correctly, bad things happen.   I’m glad he’s going back to rehab and will get the help he needs.

In regards to this new horoscope, I’m glad we in the U.S. don’t follow the “tropical zodiac”.  I would not want to be a Pisces…

Can I just say that I’m not surprised color is still an issue in the African-American community?  I mean, if racism is still an issue in America, then black people should not be surprised our hues are still up for discussion.  And I don’t know how people I still hear talk about how the 80’s were when light skinned men (a la Al B. Sure, Phillip Michael Thomas, and Christopher Williams) were in and about 2 decades later (or a little less) saw the emergence of chocolate coated brothers like Wesley Snipes, Taye Diggs, and Blair Underwood.  I’ve personally never heard of a light skin vs. dark skin party but maybe you have.  This is just another way for us to divide ourselves.

Are we really surprised that Cam Newton is entering the NFL draft??? I think not.

Speaking of NFL, I will be watching the divisional rounds this weekend.  See below for my picks:
Pittsburgh over Baltimore

New England over New York

Atlanta over Green Bay (I’m still struggling with this)

Chicago over Seattle

We’ll see how my choices pan out, especially since I was totally wrong last week (wasn’t everyone?); I only got 53 points in Fantasy Football! 😦

OK, I think I’m done. I refuse to talk about Kim Kardashian (though I love her) and her new beau, her sister Khloe’s pregnancy rumors and her and Lamar’s new show, or Sarah Palin.  I will say I’m glad that the breathing tube may be removed from Representative Gifford today, which is a blessing.   What’s going in your worlds?  What are your plans for the weekend; how do you plan on giving back?  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News-Sports Edition

After the heaviness of the series, I want today’s post to take a different turn.  Please don’t let this be the last time you discuss any of these topics with your loved ones.  Keep the dialogue open so your family and friends feel comfortable talking about these topics and hopefully they will not become victims.  This week, there have been a few things that I find interesting that relate to the world of sports.  So, I’ll be sharing the facts and stating my opinion.

First, yes my Jacksonville Jaguars lost last week to the Philadelphia Eagles.  And my crazy self gave the Eagles and Michael Vick a shout out, COMPLETELY forgetting who their opponent was on Sunday.  I did go out to watch the game (thanks to my soror @ISayWord for coming with me) and ended up leaving before the game was over because I was SO disappointed…But the two match-ups I’m anxious to see this Sunday are the Eagles vs. the Washington Redskins and my Jaguars vs. the Indianapolis Colts.  My money is definitely on the Eagles.  I really want my Jags to win, but if they play like they did against the Eagles, this game is going to the Colts… (sadly).

Speaking of Jaguars, looks like Kassim Osgood found himself in a bit of trouble.  He and Roar cheerleader Mackenzie Putnal were attacked by Putnal’s ex-boyfriend.  Julian Bartletto broke into Mackenzie’s family home, where she and Kassim were watching tv.  Julian pistol whipped them both and the family dog.   Putnal had recently issued a restraining order against Bartletto.  She was able to secure a gun and the two exchanged gun fire while Osgood jumped from a 2nd floor window and ran to a neighbors house to call police.  Thankfully, no one was seriously injured and Bartletto was arrested.  And I don’t know too much about football, but I don’t think the cheerleaders and players are supposed to fraternize with each other.  And don’t get me started on the 30 year old man being with the 19 year old girl…I wonder if her momma and daddy knew he was over there.

If you’re a reality tv junkie like me, then you know that VH1 has revealed the cast of the 1st season of “Football Wives” and the 2nd season of “Basketball Wives”.  Now, I’m disappointed with the network because, once again, they’ve added someone who is a FORMER wife on “Basketball Wives”.  At least with the new show, most of the women are actually married…and seem to have a lot of things going for them.  We’ll see how these shows play out.

So guys, what sports news do you have?  Or what news in general do you have?  Feel free to share.  Who are you pulling for during Week 4?  And what are your thoughts on this Kassim and Mackenzie situation?  I really want to know what you guys think.  Enjoy your weekend, and until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

By the way, I purposefully didn’t talk about the fact Lebron thinks he’s getting backlash because he’s black, Superhead aka Karrine Steffans has a new book coming out for couples, and the great episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” from last night. #thatisall
