Way Back Wednesday- My MJ Fix

The Michael from my youth; you can really see his nose job in this photo.

Morning, folks!  Now that we are back to our regular schedule, it’s time for the typical Wednesday post here on SGITC.  I was going to do it last week, but I was so overwhelmed with my desire to share my thoughts about “The Game” that I really didn’t have a choice!  And I miss “Happy Black Girl Day”!  So, the thing that’s going to make this Black girl happy today is talking about Michael Jackson.  For some strange reason, I was going through this MJ phase last week-singing songs, watching videos, listening to CDs…  So I’ve decided to share some of my favorite Michael songs with you guys.

First up, “Leave Me Alone”.

Next, “Dancing Machine”.  Yes, I know, Michael and his brothers, but it’s a great song!

You can’t have an MJ song (or video) list without “Thriller”!

One of my personal favorites is “Human Nature”.

I could be here all day, but I”ll stop.  What are some of your favorite MJ songs?  I know you have some so feel free to share!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?!?!?  I know I am.  And it looks like the New Orleans Saints are, too, after their win last night against the Minnesota Vikings.  This Sunday, I will be travelling to Capital City Brewing Company to watch my Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Denver Broncos.  And one of my favorite guys is coming to watch the game with me!   Hopefully, the Jags can pull a W this week and have a great season.

I was so hyped about being able to vote early in DC, and procrastinator that I am, I have still not voted.  So I will be out with the masses on Tuesday casting my vote in the DC primaries.  And to add insult to injury, I STILL don’t know who’s getting my vote.  I can say that Vincent Gray is calling for an FBI and Metro Police Investigation into claims that a “Re-Elect Fenty” worker promised 4 district residents jobs if they voted for the Mayor.  Mayor Fenty denies these claims and  is asking that the focus be on the issues.  It’s going to be interesting to see how this turns out.

Willow Smith being grown

If you didn’t know, Willow Smith, the 9 year old daughter of Will and Jada, has been signed to Roc Nation, the record label owned by Jay-Z.  While I admit her song “Whip My Hair” is catchy, I feel that it’s a little too grown for someone so young.  And her look is too much.  I feel like she’s a little outrageous for a child.  And Jay-Z had the nerve to call her the “next Michael Jackson“. Ummm, we’ll see, but I doubt it.  There’s only one MJ.

I hope the movie is as good as the book

There is a release date for Tyler Perry‘s new film “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Isn’t Enuf”.  The film is set to be released November 5 and has some heavy Hollywood hitters-Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Divine, Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Anika Noni Rose, my personal fave Kerry Washington, Tessa Thompson, Michael Ealy, Khalil Kain, and Richard Lawson.  While I wasn’t so geeked about Tyler doing the movie I hope these stars are able to create a masterpiece on the big screen.  I’ll probably read the book before the movie comes out…

So what’s going on in your world?  Who are you pulling for during Week 1?  And even though Governor Schwarzenegger signed “Chelsea’s Law”, I still haven’t heard anything new about Mitrice Richardson; yes, I will continue to bring her name up so we don’t forget about her or other African-Americans who go missing and no one seems to be doing anything to find them. (I purposefully did not discuss the pastor-I use that term loosely-in Gainesville, FL who has expressed an interest in burning the Qu’ran tomorrow to “commemorate” the 9/11 attacks.   If he wants to recognize that day burning someone’s Holy book is NOT the way to do it.) Have a great weekend, and until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News

It seems as if my vacation has lasted a little longer than expected!  Well, what better day to get on track than Friday so I can update you guys on what’s been happening this week!

I must first mention that today is the 1 year anniversary of the death of the King of Pop.  I prefer celebrating people on their birthdays rather than on the day of their death (see my post regarding Tupac), but as all radio stations are playing MJ all day, I must make mention of him as well.  Despite what you may think about him as a person, Michael Jackson was one of the greatest entertainers of our lifetime.   He had an uncanny ability to bring  joy and life to all of his fans and was able to make people fall in love with him like no other.   It’s so sad when I think of how his life has been cut short; he had so much more to give.   In any event, I hope you take a moment to recognize Michael today.  One of favorite songs by him, “Off the Wall”, is playing right now!   I urge you to not be sad today, but be glad-be glad about Michael’s life, the music he brought to us, and the memories that will live on!

Now the only way you could have missed this is if you are living under a rock-the ousting of General Stanley McChrytal.  Gen. McChrystal provided the President of the United States with his letter of resignation after an interview he had with Rolling Stone and made disparaging comments regarding civilian leaders regarding the current War on Terror, amongst other uncomplimentary comments.  So, President Obama, being the man that he is, requested the general’s presence in DC, and less than 48 hours later, the world heard of General McChrystal’s resignation, much to the delight of both Republicans, who didn’t think the President would do anything, and Democrats.   As General McChrystal is heading out the door, in comes General David Petraeus to take over our armed forces in the Middle East.  I don’t think General Petraeus will have a problem getting confirmed next week as both parties support him in this new position.

Welp, my girl has done it again.  Kim Kardashian has snagged another football player. (Yes, I realize YOU may not think this is news, but as a reality tv junkie and a fan of “Keeping up with the Kardashians” this is noteworthy to me.)  While they are not officially a couple, Kim has been on a few dates with Dallas Cowboys Miles Austin.  The pair met in LA a few months back and have been going strong ever since.  For Kim’s sake, I hope this works out for her. (Reggie, call me! 😉 )

The DMV International Film Festival begins today in DC.  As someone who LOVES a good movie, I’m pretty excited about this event.  I signed up to attend a few of the outings, so if you see me, say “Hi!”  There are film viewings, workshops, and parties going on this week, so make sure you check out a few.  This is sure to be an event that you don’t want to miss!

I realize that there are TONS of things I missed!   Why don’t you share with everyone?!  And what are your thoughts on the topics I discussed-will you attend the film festival (if you’re in DC)-what are some of your favorite MJ songs/memories?   Until next time, I’m just a Southern Girl…in the city.
