This Week in the News

I know…SHOCKER!!! When was the last time I did a “TWITN” post??? It’s been a minute.

First, I want to ask that we pray or have a moment of silence for all of the people that lost their lives in the attacks in Libya and Egypt earlier this week.  Hate is such a terrible thing, and I wish leaders would make a real effort to try to eradicate it.

Next, I want to go on record as saying that you people who think O.J. Simpson is Khloe Kardashian’s dad need a hobby… Seriously people???  Yes, Khloe looks a little different from her siblings, but that’s what happens when you have four children with the same parents.  Have you guys ever heard of biology and recessive traits??? If not, look it up, because I refuse to go into detail about genetics work.  I will say I know plenty of families with more than 4 children and not all of the children look alike.  Some are shorter, some have ligther skin, some are a little thicker than most.  It happens….

For those of you that watch “Big Brother”, I know you’re probably salivating at the mouth to find out if Dan will win again.  He is such a sneaky little snake this season!  He has played an awesome game, and if he can convince the jury of that, he has a pretty good shot at walking away with the prize.

Now, while my Jaguars had WAY better stats in Sunday’s game than Minnesota, they weren’t able to pull out a win.  I do hope (and pray) that they get their first W of the season at home…against Houston.  I know it may be a long shot, but Jacksonville is looking MUCH better than they did last year.

Next week, I’ll be focusing on Voter Education.  While I don’t care who you vote for (actually, I do!), I believe that we should ALL be well versed in the rules governing our voting rights.  So be on the lookout!  Enjoy your weekend, and until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

2010 Do-Over

Let’s be honest.  We all wish we could go back in time and change something-the nerd we were mean to in grade school who grew up to be cute AND smart and the day we fell in the mud with our white tennis skirt on.  Well, there are some people who wish they could do 2010 ALL over again.  I’ll share them with you below:

1. Kwame Kilpatrick– The former mayor of Detroit thought he was in the clear after serving 99 days of a 4 month sentence.  But after probation violation, where he missed restitution payments, Kilpatrick was sent back to prison and sentenced to serve 18 months to 5 years in a federal prison.  And to add insult to injury, just 2 weeks ago, he was indicted on corruption charges.  The indictment includes 38 new charges that have been called “a pattern of extortion, bribery, and fraud” by a federal prosecutor.  It seems Kwame can’t catch a break…

 2. The Democratic Party- Let’s face it; the Dems couldn’t get their act together, and as such, the Tea Partiers and GOP won the House.  And I know what you’re thinking-that’s typical when a Democrat is in the White House, but for the Dems, this is a big loss.   And they can’t get along.  And by that I mean they don’t agree with each other or the President.  I hope they get their act, the few that are left, to hopefully get some things accomplished.

3. Amber Portwood– The reality star from “16 & Pregnant” and “Teen Mom” was arrested for domestic violence and child endangerment.   GOOD FOR HER!  I saw the episode where she beat up Gary, her daughter’s father.  Amber was so abusive, and I’m glad that she was arrested.  Hopefully she’ll serve time and get help for anger management.  Maybe then she’ll be able to be a better mother to her daughter.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars– Now, you all know I love my football team, but I truly believe the Jags wish they could re-do this 2010 season, most specifically this game last Sunday.  Trailing behind the entire 4 quarters, the Jaguars managed to tie the game and go into overtime.  Not only that, they win the coin toss and have first possession.  Then what happens??? David Garrard throws the ball for an interception, the Redskins have possession, kick a field goal, and win the game. 😦 This loss dashed any hopes that the Jags had of going to the playoffs.  Although the Jags started out having a great season and were even # 1 in the AFC South for a few weeks, they weren’t able to hold on.  I’m hoping that Jacksonville has a great season in 2011.  I’m ready for them to go to the playoffs again.

5. The family of Mitrice Richardson- If you’re familiar with my blog, you know that I have been keeping up with the story of Mitrice Richardson, the 24 year old former honor student and beauty queen whose remains were found 11 months after she disappeared.  Last week, her mother, Latice Sutton, asked the coroner’s office to exhume her body and examine her clothing.  I hope this will help the authorities get closer to finding out who her killer is, because I do believe she was murdered.

Who do you think needs a do-over of 2010?  Maybe you or someone you know.  What are your thoughts on the stories I’ve shared?  On tomorrow’s post, I’ll share with you some people who had a pretty amazing 2010.   Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News-Sports Edition

After the heaviness of the series, I want today’s post to take a different turn.  Please don’t let this be the last time you discuss any of these topics with your loved ones.  Keep the dialogue open so your family and friends feel comfortable talking about these topics and hopefully they will not become victims.  This week, there have been a few things that I find interesting that relate to the world of sports.  So, I’ll be sharing the facts and stating my opinion.

First, yes my Jacksonville Jaguars lost last week to the Philadelphia Eagles.  And my crazy self gave the Eagles and Michael Vick a shout out, COMPLETELY forgetting who their opponent was on Sunday.  I did go out to watch the game (thanks to my soror @ISayWord for coming with me) and ended up leaving before the game was over because I was SO disappointed…But the two match-ups I’m anxious to see this Sunday are the Eagles vs. the Washington Redskins and my Jaguars vs. the Indianapolis Colts.  My money is definitely on the Eagles.  I really want my Jags to win, but if they play like they did against the Eagles, this game is going to the Colts… (sadly).

Speaking of Jaguars, looks like Kassim Osgood found himself in a bit of trouble.  He and Roar cheerleader Mackenzie Putnal were attacked by Putnal’s ex-boyfriend.  Julian Bartletto broke into Mackenzie’s family home, where she and Kassim were watching tv.  Julian pistol whipped them both and the family dog.   Putnal had recently issued a restraining order against Bartletto.  She was able to secure a gun and the two exchanged gun fire while Osgood jumped from a 2nd floor window and ran to a neighbors house to call police.  Thankfully, no one was seriously injured and Bartletto was arrested.  And I don’t know too much about football, but I don’t think the cheerleaders and players are supposed to fraternize with each other.  And don’t get me started on the 30 year old man being with the 19 year old girl…I wonder if her momma and daddy knew he was over there.

If you’re a reality tv junkie like me, then you know that VH1 has revealed the cast of the 1st season of “Football Wives” and the 2nd season of “Basketball Wives”.  Now, I’m disappointed with the network because, once again, they’ve added someone who is a FORMER wife on “Basketball Wives”.  At least with the new show, most of the women are actually married…and seem to have a lot of things going for them.  We’ll see how these shows play out.

So guys, what sports news do you have?  Or what news in general do you have?  Feel free to share.  Who are you pulling for during Week 4?  And what are your thoughts on this Kassim and Mackenzie situation?  I really want to know what you guys think.  Enjoy your weekend, and until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

By the way, I purposefully didn’t talk about the fact Lebron thinks he’s getting backlash because he’s black, Superhead aka Karrine Steffans has a new book coming out for couples, and the great episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” from last night. #thatisall

This Week in the News

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?!?!?  I know I am.  And it looks like the New Orleans Saints are, too, after their win last night against the Minnesota Vikings.  This Sunday, I will be travelling to Capital City Brewing Company to watch my Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Denver Broncos.  And one of my favorite guys is coming to watch the game with me!   Hopefully, the Jags can pull a W this week and have a great season.

I was so hyped about being able to vote early in DC, and procrastinator that I am, I have still not voted.  So I will be out with the masses on Tuesday casting my vote in the DC primaries.  And to add insult to injury, I STILL don’t know who’s getting my vote.  I can say that Vincent Gray is calling for an FBI and Metro Police Investigation into claims that a “Re-Elect Fenty” worker promised 4 district residents jobs if they voted for the Mayor.  Mayor Fenty denies these claims and  is asking that the focus be on the issues.  It’s going to be interesting to see how this turns out.

Willow Smith being grown

If you didn’t know, Willow Smith, the 9 year old daughter of Will and Jada, has been signed to Roc Nation, the record label owned by Jay-Z.  While I admit her song “Whip My Hair” is catchy, I feel that it’s a little too grown for someone so young.  And her look is too much.  I feel like she’s a little outrageous for a child.  And Jay-Z had the nerve to call her the “next Michael Jackson“. Ummm, we’ll see, but I doubt it.  There’s only one MJ.

I hope the movie is as good as the book

There is a release date for Tyler Perry‘s new film “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Isn’t Enuf”.  The film is set to be released November 5 and has some heavy Hollywood hitters-Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Divine, Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Anika Noni Rose, my personal fave Kerry Washington, Tessa Thompson, Michael Ealy, Khalil Kain, and Richard Lawson.  While I wasn’t so geeked about Tyler doing the movie I hope these stars are able to create a masterpiece on the big screen.  I’ll probably read the book before the movie comes out…

So what’s going on in your world?  Who are you pulling for during Week 1?  And even though Governor Schwarzenegger signed “Chelsea’s Law”, I still haven’t heard anything new about Mitrice Richardson; yes, I will continue to bring her name up so we don’t forget about her or other African-Americans who go missing and no one seems to be doing anything to find them. (I purposefully did not discuss the pastor-I use that term loosely-in Gainesville, FL who has expressed an interest in burning the Qu’ran tomorrow to “commemorate” the 9/11 attacks.   If he wants to recognize that day burning someone’s Holy book is NOT the way to do it.) Have a great weekend, and until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!
