The Ridiculousness of it All

Today’s post will be short and to the point (I hope).

First, let’s talk about Khloe’ Kardashian Odom’s “nip slip”.  She knew what she was doing-it was no accident.  She even stated on her blog that her stylist told her to wear a bra before her Fox & Friends appearance, but Khloe’ decided to go commando anyway.  Why?  Because she’s an attention whore.  You all know I love “Keeping up with the Kardashians”, but let’s call a spade a spade.  The whole family is full of nothing but attention seekers.  People seem to be making a big deal out of the fact that Khloe’ admitted she likes nipples.  I’m more surprised at the fact that she showed hers on live television…well, maybe not.

Why do married men (really anyone) involve themselves in sexting?  And why do public figures send these inappropriate pics to women who are not their wives?   Are they stupid?  Crazy?  Deranged?  Or do they just not give a f*ck???  No matter what we think about Anthony Weiner’s actions, it’s so easy to say what we would if we were in that situation.  In regards to Weiner and his wife, Huma Abedin-please leave these people alone and let them live their lives.  If she chooses to stay in her marriage, that’s her decision.  Who are we-strangers-to suggest what she should do?  Yes, we should hold our elected politicians to higher standards, but unfortunately, some have a tendency to disappoint.

So how many more teachers are going to sleep with students?  What about a child is sexually pleasing?  I don’t understand how these grown women can manipulate these young boys.  It’s really, really sick.  This goes to show that women can be sexual predators and prey on children, too.  And now the latest woman to sleep with a student, Rene Chantel Frank, is bringing children into the world???

Even though he didn’t mention a name, megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar told his congregation from the pulpit on Sunday that a certain preacher, who was a “friend”, had a “wreck” and should be forgiven.  (Check out the story here.)  Ok, let’s be real.  As my Auntie Madeline and I discussed, this man premeditated his actions.  And he’s a hypocrite.  You can’t speak out against homosexuality and BE a homosexual.  Yes, as Creflo Dollar stated, everyone deserves to be forgiven, but what would I look like having a predator, manipulator, and abuser as the head of my spiritual life?

That’s all the ridiculousness I have today.  I’m sure this won’t be the last time I share some with you guys.  Feel free to share some of your own or your thoughts on the ridiculousness I’ve shared.  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city.

This Week in the News

Happy Friday!  First, let me thank everyone that came out to Jin last night to help me celebrate my one year blogoversary!!!  I appreciate all of you, and your support is so overwhelming!  For those of you that missed it, my big announcement was that I have officially opened my doors for business!  Elle Speaks PR and Communications was officially launched last night, and I have my first client.  I’m currently working on securing two more, so please keep me in your prayers.  Yes, I know I’m a busy bee, but my goal is to eventually work for myself.

Some more great news to share-David Bruton, a safety for the Denver Broncos, isn’t just sitting on his tail during the NFL lockout.  He’s substitute teaching at his high school alma mater.  I think this is SO commendable!  Instead of just sitting on his keister, he’s giving back to his community.  And I’m glad that he graduated with his degree so he was able to do something constructive.  His actions definitely deserve to be recognized.

The preview for “Dark Girls”, a documentary done by Bill Duke and D. Channsin Berry, focuses on the issues still surrounding color in the Black community.  It’s amazing to me that color is still an issue in 2011.  The women and girls featured tell their stories of feeling un-pretty or “less than” just because of their complexion.  I couldn’t watch the entire thing.  I became thoroughly disgusted when a guy said he doesn’t date dark-skinned women and his reasoning as to why he doesn’t.  I know we all have preferences in what we like, whether it’s height, education background, etc., but this guy was a complete jerk.  In any event, I’ll let you guys take a look at the clip yourselves and come to your own conclusions.

One thing that seems to be on minds and in the mouths of many is that Oprah has completed her “Farewell” season.  After being a staple on afternoon television for the last 25 years, Oprah Winfrey has completed her talk show.  Honestly, I’ve never been a huge Oprah fan.  I felt that most of her shows were not geared towards my demographic.  There were a few episodes that she did that I watched-for example, when she had the cast of “Crash”, Tyler Perry, and the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides.  But most of the other topics-I could do without.  This is definitely the end of an era, but I’m sure we will still Oprah on the OWN network.  I can say that watching her on “Masters Class” this past Wednesday made me want to watch “The Color Purple”.

My girl Kim Kardashian is engaged!!!  After only dating six months, Kris Humphries, a forward for the New Jersey Nets, proposed to Kim on May 18 in her home.  Yes, while I think it’s rather quick, we all know Kim is ecstatic.  She’s wanted to be married for some time.  I wish them nothing but a lifetime of happiness.

The trial of Casey Anthony started this week.  Some shocking news has come out during the trial, such as the defense claiming little 2 year old Caylee Anthony drowned in the pool, and Casey and her dad tried to cover it up.  (Uh, who saw THAT one coming???)  I just feel really bad for this little girl who was never allowed to grow up.  If Casey is guilty, I hope she is punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Bishop Eddie Long settled with his four accusers out of court.  I’m glad this has been resolved.  I doubt that any amount of money will take away the pain and shame that these young men felt.  It will be interesting to see how Bishop Long bounces back now that this is settled, and he can move on.  It is surprising that he didn’t go to trial so he could clear his name, but just as Tulane professor Shayne Lee stated, “When you settle outside of court, it implies that there’s some guilt involved.”

Whew! It’s been a busy week!  I hope you all have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!  I plan to go to the beach and get some sun!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News

Who knew Common was a thug rapper???  I certainly missed that memo!  Now, I must admit I don’t own any Common albums (I hear what’s on the radio and what plays on my Common Slacker station), but I believe I’m familiar enough with him to know he’s NOT a thug or anything demeaning that Karl Rove wants the American people to believe that he is.  I think there was enough backlash on Twitter to get the point that America wasn’t falling for it.

And now Jill Scott is a racist…just because of some remarks she made in an article she wrote last year for Essence regarding interracial dating.  Jill states she grew up to believe that everyone is equal, but she felt “her soul wince” when she found out a friend of hers was dating a Caucasian woman.   I applaud Ms. Scott for her honesty; I’m sure we all feel some type of way when we see a friend that we feel has “made it” dating someone outside of their race, no matter or skin color or ethnicity.  Both cases are just classic examples of right wing extremists going overboard.

I’m no watcher of “Two and a Half Men”, but I’m sure someone is as it’s the #1 comedy in America.  And in the wake of Charlie Sheen going off the deep end, Ashton Kutcher will be replacing the star next season.  Apparently a deal was finalized last night.  Maybe I’ll watch the season premiere, just because…

And it appears Eddie Long is going to trial.  If you’re like me, the Bishop fell off your radar a time or two, but it appears he’s always been under the watchful eye of somebody.  Like the Bishop stated, I believe we are all ready for the truth to come out, so I support this case being settled in court.

And lest we not forget the comments that Clifton Powell made about Spike Lee.  You can listen to them here.  He admits he shouldn’t do it, but he continues talk about Spike and threaten to kick his tail…Why can’t we all just get along???  It’s one thing if you don’t like someone and/or their politics, but it isn’t always necessary to put stuff out there.  This is just an opportunity to keep stuff going in Black Hollywood, which is small anyway.

Lastly, my condolences to the families of Mia Davis and Daryl Hawks, who both passed unexpectedly this week.

What news is going on in your world?  I hope you all have a great weekend, and until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News-Enlightenment

This is what everyone's face looked like at the news this week...or maybe just mine

Happy Friday, folks! So of course there’s been WAY too much going on this week, so no small talk today.  Let’s just get this show on the road.

First, Bishop Eddie Long.  I’m not going to spend too much time on this, but I will share my thoughts.  We are not God, so we cannot judge anyone.  I will say I hope people focus on the real crime in this story-not the fact that Bishop Long may be a homosexual but the fact that he is accused of molesting young boys.   If he used a church-based organization to find his victims, that’s what makes this issue even more despicable.   I will pray for everyone involved in this, from the pulpit down to the congregation.  These people need all the support they can get.  Lastly, people need to be honest with themselves and the people in their inner circle.  I’m sure it would make their lives a whole lot easier…

On a brighter note, Micheal Vick has been named the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.  IMHO, I believe he should have been the starter from the beginning, but what do I know???  I truly believe with him leading this team, they are destined to have a great season.

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has agreed to donate $100 million to Newark, N.J. public schools.   Newark Public Schools is the largest school district in New Jersey, and I’m sure they can use the funds.  Some skeptics believe Zuckerberg is making the donation to off-set his non-flattering portrayal in the upcoming film “The Social Network“, which is set to be released on October 1.  Whatever the reason, I’m glad Zuckerberg has decided to make this donation, because I’m sure the schools need it and appreciate it.  And please believe I’ll be going to see “The Social Network” next week, if for no other reason than Justin Timberlake is in it…LAWD!!!

Sad to say, but Lyfe Jennings is headed back to jail.  In 2008, the singer was arrested for a dispute with his ex-girlfriend.  The singer was sentenced to 3 1/2 years behind bars and was charged with DUI test refusal, criminal trespassing, discharging a weapon near a street, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police offer.   I hope this will be Lyfe’s last stint behind bars.

Lastly, let’s talk about this whole “No Wedding, No Womb” thing…Yeah, I’m straight on it, and I’m going to tell you why.  I don’t believe that people who have children together should get married.  What if the people don’t love each other, or even like each other for that matter?  What if the only place they get along is the bedroom?  I believe that children need happy homes.  If parents are continually fighting, that child will have little peace.  What I do think should happen is that the two parents should be mature enough to do what is in the best interest of the child.

Ok, I’m done ranting for today.  I’m sure you all have something you want to say, so be sure to comment.  And if there’s something I missed, which I know I have, please share.  Oh, tomorrow I’ll be volunteering at the Barracks Row Fall Festival!  If you’re in the District, you should definitely stop by!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

Next week, you can look forward to more commentary from me on “No Wedding, No Womb” and mega-churches and the messages they send.
