The Ridiculousness of it All

Today’s post will be short and to the point (I hope).

First, let’s talk about Khloe’ Kardashian Odom’s “nip slip”.  She knew what she was doing-it was no accident.  She even stated on her blog that her stylist told her to wear a bra before her Fox & Friends appearance, but Khloe’ decided to go commando anyway.  Why?  Because she’s an attention whore.  You all know I love “Keeping up with the Kardashians”, but let’s call a spade a spade.  The whole family is full of nothing but attention seekers.  People seem to be making a big deal out of the fact that Khloe’ admitted she likes nipples.  I’m more surprised at the fact that she showed hers on live television…well, maybe not.

Why do married men (really anyone) involve themselves in sexting?  And why do public figures send these inappropriate pics to women who are not their wives?   Are they stupid?  Crazy?  Deranged?  Or do they just not give a f*ck???  No matter what we think about Anthony Weiner’s actions, it’s so easy to say what we would if we were in that situation.  In regards to Weiner and his wife, Huma Abedin-please leave these people alone and let them live their lives.  If she chooses to stay in her marriage, that’s her decision.  Who are we-strangers-to suggest what she should do?  Yes, we should hold our elected politicians to higher standards, but unfortunately, some have a tendency to disappoint.

So how many more teachers are going to sleep with students?  What about a child is sexually pleasing?  I don’t understand how these grown women can manipulate these young boys.  It’s really, really sick.  This goes to show that women can be sexual predators and prey on children, too.  And now the latest woman to sleep with a student, Rene Chantel Frank, is bringing children into the world???

Even though he didn’t mention a name, megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar told his congregation from the pulpit on Sunday that a certain preacher, who was a “friend”, had a “wreck” and should be forgiven.  (Check out the story here.)  Ok, let’s be real.  As my Auntie Madeline and I discussed, this man premeditated his actions.  And he’s a hypocrite.  You can’t speak out against homosexuality and BE a homosexual.  Yes, as Creflo Dollar stated, everyone deserves to be forgiven, but what would I look like having a predator, manipulator, and abuser as the head of my spiritual life?

That’s all the ridiculousness I have today.  I’m sure this won’t be the last time I share some with you guys.  Feel free to share some of your own or your thoughts on the ridiculousness I’ve shared.  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city.

This Week in the News

Happy Friday!  First, let me thank everyone that came out to Jin last night to help me celebrate my one year blogoversary!!!  I appreciate all of you, and your support is so overwhelming!  For those of you that missed it, my big announcement was that I have officially opened my doors for business!  Elle Speaks PR and Communications was officially launched last night, and I have my first client.  I’m currently working on securing two more, so please keep me in your prayers.  Yes, I know I’m a busy bee, but my goal is to eventually work for myself.

Some more great news to share-David Bruton, a safety for the Denver Broncos, isn’t just sitting on his tail during the NFL lockout.  He’s substitute teaching at his high school alma mater.  I think this is SO commendable!  Instead of just sitting on his keister, he’s giving back to his community.  And I’m glad that he graduated with his degree so he was able to do something constructive.  His actions definitely deserve to be recognized.

The preview for “Dark Girls”, a documentary done by Bill Duke and D. Channsin Berry, focuses on the issues still surrounding color in the Black community.  It’s amazing to me that color is still an issue in 2011.  The women and girls featured tell their stories of feeling un-pretty or “less than” just because of their complexion.  I couldn’t watch the entire thing.  I became thoroughly disgusted when a guy said he doesn’t date dark-skinned women and his reasoning as to why he doesn’t.  I know we all have preferences in what we like, whether it’s height, education background, etc., but this guy was a complete jerk.  In any event, I’ll let you guys take a look at the clip yourselves and come to your own conclusions.

One thing that seems to be on minds and in the mouths of many is that Oprah has completed her “Farewell” season.  After being a staple on afternoon television for the last 25 years, Oprah Winfrey has completed her talk show.  Honestly, I’ve never been a huge Oprah fan.  I felt that most of her shows were not geared towards my demographic.  There were a few episodes that she did that I watched-for example, when she had the cast of “Crash”, Tyler Perry, and the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides.  But most of the other topics-I could do without.  This is definitely the end of an era, but I’m sure we will still Oprah on the OWN network.  I can say that watching her on “Masters Class” this past Wednesday made me want to watch “The Color Purple”.

My girl Kim Kardashian is engaged!!!  After only dating six months, Kris Humphries, a forward for the New Jersey Nets, proposed to Kim on May 18 in her home.  Yes, while I think it’s rather quick, we all know Kim is ecstatic.  She’s wanted to be married for some time.  I wish them nothing but a lifetime of happiness.

The trial of Casey Anthony started this week.  Some shocking news has come out during the trial, such as the defense claiming little 2 year old Caylee Anthony drowned in the pool, and Casey and her dad tried to cover it up.  (Uh, who saw THAT one coming???)  I just feel really bad for this little girl who was never allowed to grow up.  If Casey is guilty, I hope she is punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Bishop Eddie Long settled with his four accusers out of court.  I’m glad this has been resolved.  I doubt that any amount of money will take away the pain and shame that these young men felt.  It will be interesting to see how Bishop Long bounces back now that this is settled, and he can move on.  It is surprising that he didn’t go to trial so he could clear his name, but just as Tulane professor Shayne Lee stated, “When you settle outside of court, it implies that there’s some guilt involved.”

Whew! It’s been a busy week!  I hope you all have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!  I plan to go to the beach and get some sun!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

Why There was No “This Week in the News” Post

Happy Monday!  This week should be very calm, since there was so much going on last week.  There were multiple reasons as to why I didn’t do a “This Week in the News” post on Friday.  The main reason is I didn’t feel like writing.  But most importantly, what was I going to say that hadn’t already been said???

Let’s start with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver.  Yes, the former governor of California cheated with the help and had a son with her, who was born days after the son he had with his wife.  We all know that Arnold was foul; I don’t need to blog about it.

Next, Don Lemon admitted that he was a homosexual.  I don’t need to blog about this, either.  I did mention on my Facebook page that I was more surprised to find out that Don was 45 than the fact that he was gay.  Don has a book coming out.  I personally think his sexual orientation revelation coincides with his upcoming book release…but I digress.

I didn’t give any credence to this Rapture thing.  Why?  Because according to the book of Matthew “No man knows the day nor the hour.”  So at 6:00 pm on Saturday, I was walking out of Macy’s.

So, to be perfectly honest, there wasn’t any news worth mentioning last week where I felt like we would have differing opinions.  I decided to take a little break.  In case there was anything newsworthy going on in your life or city, please feel free to share.  As for here, my life was pretty boring.  Hopefully this Friday, I’ll have something worth mentioning. 🙂  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News

Who knew Common was a thug rapper???  I certainly missed that memo!  Now, I must admit I don’t own any Common albums (I hear what’s on the radio and what plays on my Common Slacker station), but I believe I’m familiar enough with him to know he’s NOT a thug or anything demeaning that Karl Rove wants the American people to believe that he is.  I think there was enough backlash on Twitter to get the point that America wasn’t falling for it.

And now Jill Scott is a racist…just because of some remarks she made in an article she wrote last year for Essence regarding interracial dating.  Jill states she grew up to believe that everyone is equal, but she felt “her soul wince” when she found out a friend of hers was dating a Caucasian woman.   I applaud Ms. Scott for her honesty; I’m sure we all feel some type of way when we see a friend that we feel has “made it” dating someone outside of their race, no matter or skin color or ethnicity.  Both cases are just classic examples of right wing extremists going overboard.

I’m no watcher of “Two and a Half Men”, but I’m sure someone is as it’s the #1 comedy in America.  And in the wake of Charlie Sheen going off the deep end, Ashton Kutcher will be replacing the star next season.  Apparently a deal was finalized last night.  Maybe I’ll watch the season premiere, just because…

And it appears Eddie Long is going to trial.  If you’re like me, the Bishop fell off your radar a time or two, but it appears he’s always been under the watchful eye of somebody.  Like the Bishop stated, I believe we are all ready for the truth to come out, so I support this case being settled in court.

And lest we not forget the comments that Clifton Powell made about Spike Lee.  You can listen to them here.  He admits he shouldn’t do it, but he continues talk about Spike and threaten to kick his tail…Why can’t we all just get along???  It’s one thing if you don’t like someone and/or their politics, but it isn’t always necessary to put stuff out there.  This is just an opportunity to keep stuff going in Black Hollywood, which is small anyway.

Lastly, my condolences to the families of Mia Davis and Daryl Hawks, who both passed unexpectedly this week.

What news is going on in your world?  I hope you all have a great weekend, and until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Past Week in the News

Happy Saturday! I’m thoroughly enjoying my time in Atlanta, but I didn’t want to leave you all for too long!  Some pretty interesting things happened this week, so let’s do a quick re-cap!

First, the wedding of all weddings, according to some people, took place yesterday between Prince William and Kate Middleton.  I’m extremely happy for them and love it when people decide to share the rest of their lives with each other.  I’ve seen re-plays of the wedding and must admit it was a beautiful ceremony, although I don’t get into all the hype.  Her dress was beautiful, and her make-up looked very natural.  I wish them both a lifetime of happiness!

Next, devastating storms hit the South and parts of the Eastern seaboard earlier this week.  The videos and pictures of the destruction are pretty horrific.  Two schools in GA are closed for the remainder of the school year due to all of the damage. Please continue to pray for all of those affected by the storm.

The NFL Draft took place on Thursday.  That’s all well and good, but it means diddly-squat if the players remained locked out.  Pressing on…

I’m still pretty heated about President Obama revealing his birth certificate to shut up Donald Trump.  Unfortunately, it’s reminiscent of when free Blacks would have to show their “papers” to prove that they were in fact free.  I’m not going to talk about this, because I’ll get upset all over again.  I will say as much as I would like to see NeNe go off on Star tomorrow, I’m skipping “The Celebrity Apprentice”.  But I will be watching the Obamas on “Oprah” on Monday! 🙂

Lastly, a fun time was had by all at last night’s launch party of “Mood”, and I’m looking forward to the “Walk-A-Mile In Someone Else’s Shoes” fundraiser tonight benefitting Families First.  You still have time to make a donation.  Make sure you bring your heels! 🙂 I hope to see some of you all there!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

This Week in the News- It’s Too Much!

Happy Friday.  There are tons of things that have been going on this week, and I feel the need to comment on them.  One item, in particular, has caused me great discomfort, and I meant to discuss it with you all a long time ago.

First, can we talk about Donald Trump?  Now, I see he’s “potentially” putting his hat in the ring as a Republican candidate for President in 2012.  But why is he asking for Obama’s birth certificate?  Yes, I know it’s his PR’s plan to create a buzz around “The Donald” and to get his name out there, but his people couldn’t pick a better ploy?  Donald is an intelligent man.  But do any of us REALLY think Obama would be the 44th President of these United States if he was not an American citizen???  I may boycott “Celebrity Apprentice” this week just so I can show him he does not have my support.  And yes, I know I’m only one and there are tons of millions of people who will watch, but I doubt if I will be one of them.

Can we talk about this little 8 year-old boy who got pepper-sprayed in Colorado in February?  Yes, you read correctly-a 2nd grader was pepper-sprayed by cops at his school because he had a temper tantrum in class.  Still think excessive force was used?  I implore you to read the entire story here, then you can comment.  My thoughts?  I’m trying to figure out why this boy was still attending classes.  This incident is not the first time the police have been called on this student.  His mother believes the police used excessive force; I believe she’s avoiding the real issue.  This little boy has some real deep issues.  Yes, he’s seeing a therapist, but he hasn’t been diagnosed with any illnesses nor is he on any type of medication.  And honestly, if a student destroys school property and threatens to “kill” his teachers, that’s more than a temper tantrum.

It looks like the federal government is about to shutdown.  Think it doesn’t affect you?  I think you’d be surprised.  You may not feel a sting at first, but if this goes on for awhile, this could have devastating results for us all.  Go here to see how this shutdown will affect you.   And if you’re not sure how the nation’s capital will be affected, read more here.  And another article to take a look at is here.   One good thing I can say is that no parking tickets will be written during the shutdown…

Lastly, I’ll end by saying I plan on watching “Braxton Family Values” this weekend.  Yes, Toni Braxton has another hustle to help her get out of debt.  I shouldn’t watch-in the words of my “auntie” Madeline, “Don’t watch that show!”-but I can’t help it.  I think it’ll be interesting.  *shrugs* Sue me.  But if it’s crap, please believe I’ll let you guys know.

So what did I miss?  How will you be affected if the government shuts down?  Or will your life go on as if nothing changed?  What do you think about Donald Trump harassing Obama?  (Or is he just asking for something simple.)  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

P.S. An interesting article I came across.  Hopefully the police will back on this and find the killer.  And I hope they find Tupac’s killer, too.

What I Missed Last Week

Even though I touched on a lot of things during last week’s “This Week in the News”, there were a number of things I failed to mention.  So today’s post is going to cover those topics and my thoughts on them.

Even after the issue with Rihanna, I was still a Chris Brown fan.  He admitted his mistake, took anger management, and took his punishment.  (Plus, if we can forgive R. Kelly and Michael Vick, why is Chris Brown different.)  And let’s face it-the boy is uber-talented!  So imagine EVERYONE’s shock when C. Breezy lost it on GMA with Robin after she asked him about Rihanna.  (If you didn’t see the video of the interview, watch it here.)   IMHO, I don’t think she went in that hard.  Chris needs to learn to control his temper.  And someone made a really good point-Ike got questioned til the day he died about his hitting Tina, so Chris isn’t going to be any different.  If he didn’t want to address it, he should have told Robin that when he got a preview of the questions.   Unfortunately, this is going to be following Chris as long as he stays in the limelight.  I am anxious to find out what will happen on his appearance tonight on “Dancing with the Stars”.

About 2 weeks ago, I mentioned that Carmelo Anthony may have a love child in NY.   Well, my girl LaLa went on Charlamagne’s morning show to address the rumors, how she’s done with having kids, and discussed some other things.  One thing that I can say about LaLa is that she always stays professional and diplomatic, even when we think she should throw people under the bus! 🙂

Lastly, after a bitter divorce and a long custody battle, Dwyane Wade won sole custody of his sons.  As I stated in a previous post, we shouldn’t necessarily applaud fathers who are in their children’s lives, but I will say I’m glad he fought for his sons.  How many men, especially professional athletes, fight for SOLE custody of their children?  Not too many I know.  And the good thing is that Wade wants the boys to have a great relationship with their mother, so I hope they are able to be adults and co-parent.

That’s it today, folks!  What else happened last week that I missed?  Or what’s happened in the past few days that you want to share?  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

PS Can I say I HATE Chris Brown’s blonde hair?!? UGH!!!
