Merry Christmas!

Christmas is by far my favorite holiday!  Growing up, it was definitely because of the gifts.
🙂 Now, it’s because I get to spend time with my family.  Last night, my maternal side had Christmas Eve dinner a day early.  It was awesome seeing my grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins. I especially enjoyed meeting my two new baby cousins.  Most important, I get to spend time with Southern Mom!  We’ve hung out, talked, cooked together, and even did a little shopping!  Tonight, we’re going to see Christmas lights.

I’m excited about going to visit my paternal side on Christmas Day for our annual family dinner.  Southern Dad and I get to hang out a little, which we haven’t really done since I moved to DC.  Although I won’t get to meet my Godson this time, I can’t wait to see my other family members.  Southern Cousin and I are getting our run in on Wednesday, and the rest of the clan is supposed to go see “Django Unchained” later in the day.

I missed out on spending time with family last year, so I’m enjoying every moment of being back in my home state.  And I think my family has and will enjoy it, too.  Especially my older cousins that still pick on me.  And I wasn’t ready for my younger cousin, who alerted me to his high school graduation next year, saying “Yes, ma’am” when I confirmed that he was in fact a senior.  I told him to pump his brakes-you don’t have to call me “ma’am”!  But I am glad to see his parents are raising him right.  Those children in DC don’t say it.

So, whatever your traditions, make sure to enjoy this time with family and friends.  But don’t forget the most important reason for this season-Jesus.  I wish you all a happy, safe, joyful, and blessed holiday!  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

Christmas 2011

Pile of gorgeous gifts

While I wasn’t able to spend Christmas with all of the people I loved, I had a very enjoyable holiday; I hope you guys did, too.  The Boy and I exchanged gifts, my Granny gave me a beautiful bracelet, and I even bought myself a few things. 🙂 Southern Parents and I will exchange our gifts later.  Since I wasn’t able to travel to SC, I shipped my gifts to my Godmother.  I’m not sure they reached her in time, but she told me not to worry.  I’m salty with USPS though, because it looks like my package was chilling in Atlanta for 2 days….there’s nothing I can really do about it, but I’m still pissed.

I was able to hang out with some old friends and meet some new acquaintances at two holiday parties earlier this month.  At my PT job on Christmas Eve, two of my co-workers were surprised with a gifts from our team members.  I was very excited I could take part in making someone’s holiday a little bit brighter.  And it warms my heart when deserving people are pleasantly surprised.  And I must say that I blushed a little when The Boy called me last night and told me he just wanted to hear my voice. *hearts in eyes* (Ok, enough with the swooning.)

All in all, my Christmas was great.  I ate what I wanted, including Southern Mom’s Apple Cake she baked just for me.  I plan on going to do some light shopping today, not Christmas related, but for some essentials that are needed.  And I may even take myself to the movies, courtesy of one of my gifts, but we’ll see how my day goes.  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

Elle’s 2011 Goals

Happy 2011! I trust you all had a great celebration last night!  I did- I cooked with my friend American Girl in DC aka @AGinDC on Twitter, then we went to my friend’s house to ring in the new year.  Sadly, in the midst of celebrating, I’ve lost my voice. 😦  Even in the midst of this, I still want to share with you my goals, not resolutions, for 2011.

1. Freelance writing- If you know me personally, and read the “Hire Elle” page, you know I really want to work on becoming my own boss and freelancing…and get paid doing it! 🙂  I can say that I am well on my way.  I have written for “For Harriet” online magazine, and HerExchange, which is another online magazine.  I actually have a recurring post each week with HerExchange.  I also have an upcoming article in “Fearless” magazine, which should be out in next month’s issue.

2. Become healthier- I need to eat better and exercise more.  Not only will I feel better (having more energy), but it will help my hair grow, too! 🙂  Yes, I’m being slightly vain, but I’m just being honest.  And if I can’t be honest with you guys, then with whom can I be honest?!?

3. Financial freedom- I’m happy to say that I am taking my finances into my own hands.  I’m paying things off and am able to have a little bit saved over.  As long as I continue my goal setting and meeting those goals, then the sky’s the limit for me, and my bank account!

4. Date more- I’m happy to say I’ve worked on this a little in 2010, and I hope that I can continue on this journey into 2011.  Based on the experience I had a The Baltimore Social, where I had no expectations but just had fun, I realized that I took myself, and dating, WAY too seriously.  Now, of course I still want to get married and have babies, but I’m not going to go into every situation expecting to meet my husband.

That’s just for starters, and I’m sure as we progress into the year, more things will be put on my list.  So what are your goals for 2011?  And how did you ring in the new year?  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!

Christmas Break

I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas!  You’re favorite Southern girl is getting ready to travel to be with the family for the holidays and is taking a break! I want you all to be safe (if you’re travelling) and enjoy your family and friends.  Don’t forget that Jesus is the reason for the season!  Don’t fret, I won’t be gone long; I’ll be back next week with celebration updates and my “2010-Year in Review” posts.  Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!
