If you know me personally, you know I’m a big buff of Black history and knowing the contributions that people of African descent made to the entire world. Each day this month, I’ll highlight a little known (or maybe a well-known) Black history fact.
This month, I’ve decided to do a series highlighting young African-American business owners and rising starts. Some include a baker, a rising music mogul, a photographer, and a few magazine founders.
For today’s Black History Month fact, see below:
“Allensworth is the only California community to be founded, financed and governed by African-Americans. Created by Allen Allensworth in 1908, the town was built with the intention of establishing a self-sufficient, all-black city where African-Americans could live their lives free of racial discrimination.”

Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city! Oh, and feel free to share your own Black history facts throughout the month as well!

The downtown section of Allensworth has been persevered as a Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. The Friends of Allensworth and the California Department of Parks are hosting a Black Historic Month program at the park on Saturday, February 12, 2011.
There is currently an exhibit at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles titled “Allensworth A Place, A People, A Story”. The exhibit will be there until February 27th.
