Happy Friday! I am so ready for this long weekend! Yes, we are all excited but we also need to find a way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. If you’re in the DMV you should definitely attend Benvole, Inc’s fundraiser tomorrow. Today is the last day to purchase tickets (go here), so get yours NOW!!! And of course yours truly will be there. Also, make sure you give your time on Monday. There are multiple things going on in DC and I’m sure in your city, so do your research and find a way to give back!
Now…that’s out of the way, let’s get into this week’s news!
First, I’m really sad about Ted Williams’ relapse. It’s very unfortunate, especially since he was headed in the right direction. But when we get too much too fast, if we’re not equipped to handle it correctly, bad things happen. I’m glad he’s going back to rehab and will get the help he needs.
In regards to this new horoscope, I’m glad we in the U.S. don’t follow the “tropical zodiac”. I would not want to be a Pisces…
Can I just say that I’m not surprised color is still an issue in the African-American community? I mean, if racism is still an issue in America, then black people should not be surprised our hues are still up for discussion. And I don’t know how people I still hear talk about how the 80’s were when light skinned men (a la Al B. Sure, Phillip Michael Thomas, and Christopher Williams) were in and about 2 decades later (or a little less) saw the emergence of chocolate coated brothers like Wesley Snipes, Taye Diggs, and Blair Underwood. I’ve personally never heard of a light skin vs. dark skin party but maybe you have. This is just another way for us to divide ourselves.
Are we really surprised that Cam Newton is entering the NFL draft??? I think not.
Speaking of NFL, I will be watching the divisional rounds this weekend. See below for my picks:
Pittsburgh over Baltimore
New England over New York
Atlanta over Green Bay (I’m still struggling with this)
Chicago over Seattle
We’ll see how my choices pan out, especially since I was totally wrong last week (wasn’t everyone?); I only got 53 points in Fantasy Football! 😦
OK, I think I’m done. I refuse to talk about Kim Kardashian (though I love her) and her new beau, her sister Khloe’s pregnancy rumors and her and Lamar’s new show, or Sarah Palin. I will say I’m glad that the breathing tube may be removed from Representative Gifford today, which is a blessing. What’s going in your worlds? What are your plans for the weekend; how do you plan on giving back? Until next time, I’m just a Southern girl…in the city!
